Leave-in products for curly hair
Leave-in conditioner is the 3rd step in the Curlsmith Method. Since curly hair is inherently dry, keeping it moisturised in between washes is key to ensure it doesn’t become rough or brittle. There are different types of leave-in conditioners, based on their texture and how moisturising they are, which can be suitable for different hair types.
Why is it important to use leave-in conditioner on curly hair?
Curly hair sprouts from the scalp in a complex texture, full of twists and turns. This makes it difficult for sebum, the hair’s natural lubricant, to travel down the hair shaft and keep it nourished. That’s why curly hair tends to become dry quickly after wash day, especially on its ends.
How many types of leave-in conditioners are there?
Leave-in conditioner comes in many different formats and textures, to suit different hair types. It can come in a weightless spray format, milk, lotion, cream or butter, and each of these textures will be suitable for a different hair thickness and density. Every texture will provide a different moisture level. The finer the hair, the lighter texture of leave-in conditioner should you choose. This way, the product will hydrate your strands without risking to weigh your curls down or make your roots look oily.
It’s important to note that leave-in conditioners are NOT styling products. Their function is to hydrate the hair and keep it moisturised, they do not provide frizz control or definition. An exception is our Hold Me Softly Style Balm, which is a 2 in 1 leave-in and styling cream that provides gentle hold and definition for a soft, effortless result.
They are also different from regular conditioners or deep conditioners, as unlike those types of products, leave-in conditioners are not to be rinsed out.
How do you add leave-in conditioner to your routine?
As the name suggests, leave-in conditioner should be applied after your regular shower routine and left on the hair, without rinsing it out. It’s always best to apply it when the hair is still soaking wet, as the water will help emulsify it and spread it more evenly on your strands. Even application is key, as you want to make sure your whole head is evenly moisturised.
Pro tip: keep your leave-in bottle in the shower and apply it before coming out, to make sure your hair is wet enough!
How to pick your leave-in conditioner based on your hair needs
Depending on their particular actives, leave-in conditioners can have additional benefits. You can pick a certain leave-in based on your hair needs, or a combination of more than one to alternate into your routine depending on which results you’re looking for every day.
