Leave In Conditioners
for Curly Hair

Leave-in conditioners are essential to curly hair due to its drier texture. Curls and coils can struggle to maintain moisture and nourishment in between washes. Choose your cream based on your hair thickness (if you have fine hair, you should use a lighter textured product).

Why Is It Important to Use Leave-in Conditioner on Curly Hair?

Leave-in conditioner is the 3rd step in the Curlsmith Method. Since curly hair is inherently dry, keeping it moisturised in between washes is important to ensure it doesn’t become rough or brittle.

Using a leave-in conditioner after your shower will help lock in moisture and promote hydrated curls throughout the week. These are not stylers though, they help to prepare the hair to be styled. Paired with a styling product, leave-in conditioner helps reduce frizz and dullness.

Curly hair sprouts from the scalp in a complex texture, full of twists and turns. This makes it difficult for sebum, the hair’s natural lubricant, to travel down the hair shaft and keep it nourished. Because of this, curly hair tends to become dry quickly after wash day, especially on its ends. This is why it is important to know how to use these leave-in products.

How Many Types of Leave-in Conditioners Are There?

There are different types of leave-in conditioners, based on their texture and how moisturising they are, which can be suitable for different hair typesIt can come in a weightless spray format, milk, lotion, cream or butter, and each of these textures will be suitable for a different hair thickness and density.

Every texture of leave-in conditioner will provide a different moisture level. If you have finer hair, you should use a lighter texture of leave-in conditioner. This way, the product will hydrate your strands without risking to weigh your curls down or the appearance of oily hair.

Which Leave-In Conditioner Should You Use?

Depending on their particular active ingredients, leave-in conditioners can have additional benefits. You can pick a certain leave-in conditioner for curly hair based on your needs. You could also select a combination of more than one to alternate into your routine depending on your hair goals:

  • Protein-rich: To make your strands stronger and more elastic, look at our Strength Recipes

  • Fragrance free: If you have a sensitive scalp, or if you like to layer multiple leave-in products to achieve your desired results, check out our Shine Recipes

  • Weightless texture: For those that need lightweight formulas that do not weigh down your hair and keep build-up to a minimum, our Scalp Recipes will have your back.

  • Deep moisture: If your hair is particularly dry you can quench it with the help of our Moisture Recipes
